Daffodils go Wales Wide as Community Councils get involved in the biggest mass planting undertaken for a generation.Daffodils go Wales Wide as Community Councils get involved in the biggest mass planting undertaken for a generation.

Following the failure of almost all the major county and city councils to take up the Welsh Daffodil bulb offer sent out by the team at Really Welsh in February 2008, the company has today revealed that its plan to sell directly to the 750 Community councils right across Wales has been a huge success.

Reporting that to date 30% of councils written to in the spring, have responded favourably, Richard Arnold noted that ” it’s clear, communities in Wales, not large bureaucratic authorities, are the fast moving operators here – we’ve offered to deliver them fantastic Welsh Daffodils at a competitive rate, and they’ve responded without trying to tie us up in town hall red tape so beloved of their bigger counterparts”.
“Sadly last year, of all the county councils approached, only Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend & Denbighshire took up our offer of Welsh daffodils in a small way – while most never replied at all. Some Councils even had the cheek to tell us they planted Dutch daffs, and that they “would become Welsh in time” Arnold bemoans.

Really Welsh, clearly frustrated by the Town Halls approach to local sourcing in ‘08 took matters into their own hand this year, and Richard, Rhiannon Williams & Chris Stillwell in their office, drew up and personally signed all the letters sent out to the 750 bodies in Wales…. “it involved a lot of envelope licking” reported Williams, “but worth it when the replies and orders began to flood in, and it’s great to see that the passion for growing locally isn’t dead, but just buried occasionally by bureaucracy”.
